I am one of a different thought. Once the tank is completely clean on the inside, coat by instructions, with one of the currently available tank coatings. Either the blue or red. It is very important to coat the tank as the area of the tank not covered by the fuel when parked exposes a large area of the tank that is susceptible to rust from the moisture formed in the tank. At one time I performed routine maintenance on a group of cars and trucks for the owner. I cleaned the tank on a 1946 truck and re-installed it. Within a year rust holes appeared on the top and sides of the tank not covered by the fuel. Every other tank I cleaned, I coated, and to this day there are no issues in those vehicles. You are invited to scroll down to the TECH TALK in this Forum and scan the "School is in Session" (new). I am confident you will pick up several hints on maintenance and rebuilding.

Hi DanK,
I am of the school of thought that believes in coating the inside of the petrol tank, and even did the vac tank also. No problems since 2009.
The word of warning is you must follow the 3 stage process to the leter of the law.
Clean Derust and Etch Coat.
The different suppliers have a variation but the basic process. is the same.
We dont have ethanol in all fuels yet over here in OZ, but I have heard some say this may be a problem.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on.
Cheers
Ray

I have used the 10% fuel for several years now and absolutely no problems. I also coat all surfaces inside the vacuum tank.

I coated the gas tank of my '30 almost 20 years ago and never had a problem. After boiling out the tank the inside of the tank become porous and tends to rust. But be sure to follow the instructions carefully.

Professionally boiled out the gas tank on my all original '32 back in 1973 after it had sat in a barn for 20 years with gas in the tank. The tank was badly varnished. The tank came out perfectly clean. Never coated the tank and it is still pristine inside of the tank 40 years later. The saddle tanks on my '68 GMC were factory coated on the inside and the sealer lasted a year before the sealer dissolved and totally plugged up the fuel system. It was a real nightmare! I have several friends that used the tank sealer recently and the gasoline ate the sealer. Like I said above, some guys like the sealer and some guys don't like the sealer. Some have had great luck with the sealer and others haven't. I guess it is a matter of preference. I'm one of the dudes that prefers not to use the stuff.

Actually, you can stop small leaks and prevent any more by the use of the tank liner. The tank lining will also prevent damage caused by the tank "sweating". The place where I purchase my tanks will not sell a new tank until it is lined.
