Alright here we go with the questions: Speedometer gauge stopped working. Since my speedometer cable was not in best of conditions I replaced it. Gauge still didn't function. I disconnected cable at the gauge end and went for a drive, the shaft/rod did not turn inside cable which leave me to believe there's something wrong at the transmission gear end. I reconnected my cable to the gauge and hook up my cordless drill to the transmission end of the cable and made the drill turn in reverse. Gauge needle did not move. Is it possible that both ends (Transmission gear and gauge are broken at the same time?) I'm also having great difficulty in removing the speedometer gauge I can't get at the two bottom lower nuts due to the bracket that mounts from the firewall to the base of the dash behind the steering column. Is there a special way to take the gauge out? I also notice that this gauge has and additional piece that attaches to it in the back and that is where my speedometer cable plugs in. What is the purpose of that additional piece? Is it used for gear ratio adjustments for the speedometer? I've seen many speedometer gauges but that additional mounting piece is never part of the gauge.

Try slowly spinning the cable clockwise and counterclockwise. I don't have a '50 so don't know which way the cable twists.

I would guess that the attachment is a gear matching device and may be the source of your problem.

I did that and no movement at all on the gauge needle, unless I'm wrong the proper direction is counterclockwise
