I've watched dozens of Youtube videos showing every kind of carb/intake/exhaust you can imagine. 4 barrel,3 deuces. 2 one barrels, even webers. They all seem to have the same problem. They don't take the gas well. They're not quick on the responce. Even a stock set up from GM has this problem. Is it due to the vacuum advance on the dist. or what. I don't think anyone has ever figured it out. Any ideas? They run smooth and everthing else but slow responce time. Curious.

That is the nature of beast because of the geometry of a long stroke OHV inline six. The pros of the Chevrolet long stroke they don't need to be reved up high like a V/8 or a rice rocket to develop torque, they have good low RPM torque, they lug well.......
If you want a high performance long stroke six, the recip parts need to be balanced, ported and relieved and multi-carbs as per the 3 one barrels on the early Corvettes, to get the fuel air mix close to the cylinders. some of the larger late models like the 292 do fairly well with a four barrel. MrMack, I have a 216 bored .010 over and a really nicely worked over head from the old Kay Sissle's Shop in West Covina. I full pressured the engine two and Arias made up the pistins. I built my own side draft manifold with balance tubes and use Weber side drafts. It also has an HEI and a full roller cam setup from Herbert cams. The only two things i did differently is use a electric water pump and a fan with a thermostatic switch. I have it in a old '37 coupe with an old Packard three on the floor with an O/D. I'm sure happy with it. I also have a 292 and it is a monster for torque. Both are fun and when folks come out to the Nostalgia Races they seem to like the roar of those inlines. But I think your suggestions are right on the money. Normbc9

Who drilled the crankshaft for you to make the 216 full pressure? What year was the engine block and what year crankshaft did you use?
