I am looking for a carburator that I can replace a W1 with. It is the original carb that came with the car and I rebuilt it not that long ago. I was unable to get the main jet out of it and the rebuild kit did not come with a replacement. I think the jet is damaged and I can not get the car to run right and I think this is the issue. Does any one know of an updated carb that is more tunable.

1932 Chevrolet
194cid

Thank you for the help

A carter 569-S is the best carter to use on your 1932. They are basically a 1946 carter w1 body carb with the 1932-6 throttle arm fitted. They appear on ebay all the time.

The 569-s is a replacement carb for 1932-1936 Carter W-1 models. It's an excellent carb andwill give you better performance and gas mileage.

If you have an original 1932 212-S or a 235-S carburetor on your car it is worth big bucks! It takes experience to know how to remove the main jet when it is frozen without damaging the jet. The main jets are scarce and expensive when purchased. At any rate, the replacement 569-S is definitely the way to go since it is a much better performing carburetor than the original 212-S and the 235-S.

If you purchase a rebuildable 569-S make sure that you find a QUALIFIED carburetor man with the correct carb. tools to do the job because, due the demand, a 569-S core is not cheap either.

Good luck with your project.

The original Carter W-1 can be rebuilt by someone with the tools, knowledge and experience. It also helps to have a stock of parts. The 212S is not the best and only gets ~10 mpg. The 235S (later production) is okay and very close in performance to the later versions. It may be true that the 569S gives better performance but to be accurate it would take a engine dynomometer and other test equipment to know for sure. Anecdotal data has too many potential errors to give accurate comparisons. I spent several years in a group that did engine testing for the EPA under contract and also for the major company I worked for.

Has anybody thought about making a new throttle arm for the 574-S of 1946-47-48 so that the dogleg throttle arm can be replaced , and then used as a 569-S. ???

Don't know of anyone. Not sure why you would need to do it considering the cost? There are plenty of W-1 cores out there. Haven't looked but suspect that the throttle shaft for the 569S is a direct replacement. Do know that several have just flattened the later arm to use on an '32-'36 application.

I may not be accurate and my only test equipment is my 32 chev, but I got only 10+/- MPG with my original carb rebuilt by a VCCA member (DS) and get 19 mpg +/- with a 569s #421. Lots of test equipment and analysis may be great but I feel comfortable with actual field experiece that is verified by my wallet. I'm not knocking technical analysis as my son's first computer programming job was designing a successful test program for diesel engines for a goverment contractor after three other companies failed.

The 212S gets ~ 10 mpg. That must have been what you had. The 235S gets ~ 16 mpg. Those numbers are an average from several engines/carburetor combinations. A given engine/carb can give either better or worse.

So are there any of the 596-S carbs for sale? If so who might have them. I was in Hershey this past week and I did not see any of them. As big as the event was it could have been an easy miss. I did run into a guy out of New York that claimed he could rebuild the W-1 on my 32. Based on the information on this post I can see I need to ask more questions before proceeding. This brings me to a second question. Who can rebuild the my original W-1 carb? Thanks for any help anyone can send my way.

I sent my original 32 carb to the Junkyard Dog and he did a great job rebuilding it and it runs pretty well. Beautiful to look at too....

First begin by properly identifing your carb. If it's an earlier carb and you want originality proceed with getting yours rebuilt. However if you are planning on a driver and 10 mpg is not what you want then finding and rebuilding a 569s (not 596 as posted above) will give you better fuel mileage and performance.

Sorry a little dyslexia there on the numbers. I do want keep what I got and have the driver at the same time if that's possible. Meaning changing them out depending on show or driver/driving. I don't have the tag on my carb so I'm not sure how else to tell what I've got.

Due to the demand, good rebuildable 569-S carburetors are not cheap. Just sold two of them yesterday to the same dude.

There may be a number stamped on the face of the bottom mounting flange. There are several other physical characteristics that would need checking such as does it have a vacuum line port? number of screws that hold the air horn to the body?-straight or offset throttle arm? Both JYD and Chipper would be good sources for identifying help.

I may have bought a pig in a poke off Ebay, but you never know. The list said, chevy carb 32 through 36. It has the C stamped in the side and it is a W1. My only concern is the box says CA 332 Carburetor from the Unit Parts Company. This is a bit confusing unless it's just the way the company listed the part. For 50 bucks it may have been worth the chance.

Until I have it hand I will not know for sure. The picture sure looks like a 32. Fingers crossed on this one.

By the way, thanks for all the help on this. Steve I will call you on what you have this weekend.

Post the eBay item number or a link to the auction and we will check out the photo to see if the carburetor is a 569-S.

I wish you luck on your purchase. After checking out some ebay listings I found it very entertaining but not very accurate for listings. Even saw what I believe is a 4 cyl manifold inverted with a downdraft carb mounted to it and listed as fitting 32-37 or such. Speedster conversion?

Junkyard Dog this is the listing number from Ebay
170923309708.
Not a lot to look at, I'm hoping for the best on this one. I'm always concerned when I see different colors on the carb parts. I guess I'll see in the next day or so. Thanks for all your help with this. Once I get it I'll provide some hopefully better news and info. Just have a tag hanging on it could be a start. The box is what throws me with that number on it.

Checked out the eBay auction and there is only one photo of the carburetor in question, so there is not much detail to view. However, based on the configuration of the choke arm assembly it appears that the carburetor is not a 569-S.

I agree. Can't see well enough on the one photo but likely it is a '36 (based on the number of patent numbers on casting). If the photo was of the other side identification would be easier.

Hey Chip & Skip, from looking at it, I think it's a 34/35. If it was a 36 then there would be 3 screws in the air horn. It is an early carb so you will be able to get your money back.

Once I have it in hand I will post some pics for all to see. Perhaps someone else can use it in the group if it's not something I can use. Thanks for all the help on this one. Life with a car from the thirties is like being on an Easter egg hut all the time. I guess that's part of the reason well all do it. It's the chase and the hunt!
