Hello to you all, my rear axle makes noise while coasting and I want to pull the outside axle bearings and have a look. Can this be done by just removing the wheel then the seal?
Are the bearings same as a Ford T? ( Hyatt rollers) My car is a 22 touring. Thanks.

First you will need to remove the hub and that may be a problem. If the car is operational, loosen the axle nut and drive the car in tight circles in the parking lot. That may loosen them up for removal. Next is the pulling of the axle and that is just pulling it out of the axle housing. A slide hammer works good for that project. Now you can inspect the bearings and if you can find obvious damage/wear you will need to press them off the axle. The number on the bearing can be used for a replacement.

I think it is obvious you need to remove the axle retainer held on by 4 bolts.

I think you are talking about a later axle. My 490 axle is not like that. I have a hub puller and I've had the wheels off before.

Right you are (and I have a 490 too). I yield to the repair manual instructions.

A review of the repair manual shows that considerable dis-assembly is needed to remove the axle bearings (roller). Basically the dis-assembly of the complete rear drive-line is required.
