Hi Andy,
What you really need is a copy of the Installation and Operating Instructions for the Model 985697 or read my article in the April 1985 G&D.

Take a look at the bottom of the radio and look at the removable cover. The large hole with the shaft visible is the dial light control. Across from that is a smaller hole. Insert a small screwdriver in this hole and with the radio at maximum volume and tuned to a station on the high (1400) end of the dial adjust the antenna trimmer ***** (scrue)* for maximum volume.

If your side mount antenna is only a two-section antenna it is probably too inefficient for this radio.

(* The couth monster got us on that one.)

Hi Andy,

Answers vary from defective antenna trimmer to poor job of restoration/repair of the radio.

The original antenna was a 4 section telescoping unit side cowl mounted or a 4 section reel antenna. The radio was designed for a large "capacity" antenna. When you touch the antenna you are adding extra "capacity".

Contact me directly for a copy of the Installation and Operating Instructions and a copy of the G&D article.

J.C.Whitney used to have a 4 section antenna in thier catalog.I have one and its real tall.I checked their catalog and its no longer offered.

Try www.fillingstation.com -they have an antenna listed in their catalog #CR-181.If you contact them they will give you more info. about it.
