Rich47, In looking at some recent postings on jacks, I saw one from you saying you had an original 47 jack. If the 48 jack is the same, could you please post a couple of pictures of it? I seem to be having trouble finding one and I don't just want to buy a jack that someone says is for a 48. Thanks. Beamer

The jacks were the same from 1941-1948.

That jack/tool box is neat. It wouldn't be to hard to make one like it.

About 8 years ago I was looking for a jack for my 41. One of Gene's contemporaries showed me the two jacks that were available in 41. Many of the old timers should know him? His name is Phil Hubbard. I don't know how many years the round shafted jack was used in the 40's. My research at the time called the jack in 1941 a "Universal Jack" #985377. Like a lot of other original parts these jacks are rare and you could spend over $150.00 on one. I got mine on ebay for around $80.00 at the time. I assume they are still available at Hershey? Good luck, Mike

P.S. It had to be pretty scary to use one of these. The base is only about 6 inches square and gravel roads were uneven. I will probably never use mine because of my safety concerns. I like AAA.

P.S. This is my first attempt at posting pictures with Photobucket. Webshot is no longer available. I will try harder next time to size the picture.

The round post jack was an accessory "up-grade" jack and in 1948. a hydraulic jack was also available as an accessory.
It was never used in production.

Mike, You did a great job with these photos! They are the first I have seen showing the profile of the jack where it fits the bumper. I am going to print out several copies and put one in all my vehicles so it will be a handy reference whenever I am where antique car parts are being sold. I will also keep one close by my computer for a ready reference if I see a jack advertises as being for a '48 Chevy. I appreciate all photos as they show some aspect of what I am after. Thanks everyone. Beamer

I do not know if this is another possible OEM jack or should be avoided.
Our has a similar looking base to chef-chevy'.Gene's picture.
However the jack looks much more like the one shown on the left in Mike's picture.

Not as 'sophisticated' looking and uses a flat stock jack handle.
I also agree with Mike - I wouldn't trust it unless it was a life or death emergency.

Possible Antique FLAPS Jack??? :) Seriously, maybe ours is.

Mike, Thanks a lot - great photos! I printed these photos as well to help me identify the correct jack in case I ever come across one. Beamer

That's why posted a picture of ours.
Too many times I'd find a part at a swap meet or someplace thinking it was correct only to get it home and then realize it wasn't.

What was the deal with the 48 hydraulic jack? It was listed as an accessory but they never made or sold any?

Beamer, I think you should also zoom in on the top picture with the green lift mechanism. You will see directions on how the jack works. I also think the color is correct for this part!!! All the ones I have seen were this shade of green. Good luck, Mike

P.S. check out this web address 1940chevrolet.com/files/images/1941universaljack.jpg or look at 1940chevrolet.com/jack
Don't type in www. or http. before the addresses I gave you.
