Hey, people. My 40 Master Deluxe, in the process of restoration, has suddenly developed a really bad clutch chatter to the point that it is even present after changing gears - especially in 'downshifting' - and I can't even start up without embarrassement. This chatter has always been there as far back as I can remember and I always attributed it to oil on the clutch face, because it always disappeared after everything was warmed up - i.e., after a mile or so. It sounds like 'Major Repair'. Any thoughts on this before I start some major dismanteling?

It sounds like the flywheel and/or clutch pressure plate needs to be resurfaced. The simple thing to do is check to make sure all of the pressure plate bolts are tight. I had this chatter problem on my both of my old chevys and resurfacing the flywheel made the cars so nice to drive. Of course, while I was in there everything got replaced: clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing (bushing), and throwout bearing.

Due to the fact that you said it suddenly developed the problem-I would say something broke in the clutch. The springs in the disc-something in the pressure plate???---Would need to be removed and inspected.Plan on replacing the pilot bearing, throw out bearing ,disc & pressure plate.Resurfacing the flywheel may also be necessary.Check for broken motor mounts and the transmission mount. If the trans. mount is replaced adjust the fore and aft specs.as per shop manual.

Yeah, Gene. I also suspect the motor/transmission mount, because even though the problem has always been there, it suddenly stopped going away after everything warmed up. I have ordered everything except the mounts. I'll order them tomorrow. Thanks guys.
