Last year I bought a running 216 engine at a swap meet, and in addition to the plugs in the engine, there were also 5 AC M-8 spark plugs in a box. Was the AC M-8 the original plug for the 216?

I believe the plug for the original 216 (1937) was an AC 46. That's the plug that my '38 left the factory with.

A friend gave me another set of M-8's. Both sets have insulators that are white with AC M-8 on them, but one set also has green stripes on the insulators. Which plug is the original, and which came out later?

I believe the original plug was an AC 104.

The 1946-1948 came with the M-8. The 104 and 106 came in the 1941 and 1942 models. After 1948 the 104-106 was discontinued and the M-8, which was much improved, was sold for replacement in 1941-1942 models.

The smooth plus with the M-8 I am of the understanding are the original plugs. The ringed plugs came out much later.

The ribbed AC plugs were first used by Chevrolet in 1956. The M-8 ribbed version probably came along at that time also.
The ribbs did two things. Helped to eleminate a spark running down the side of the plug and made a better seal for the boot that was used on all applications by that time.

If it could be posted as a table then it would be much easier to understand. Don't know how to get that done.

Good job Chip. This would be a cool list for us to expand by another 20 years or so.

But then maybe we should post it in the MEMBERS area (Resource Center).

Just a thought. Maybe others will want to join in on it.

The list is the standard plug for passenger and in most years 1/2 ton trucks. Taxis, delivery and other slow speed vehicles often used a hotter plug. An example is the 108 plug was used for the '41-'42 taxis, etc. Newer than 1954 gets more complicated as there generally were many more spark plugs used. I have a bunch of that information but never put it in the table. Hope everyone feels free to add to the list or make corrections.
