there are two "cup" type washers (one larger) that go on either side of the diaphragm called "washer, fuel pump diaphragm protector upper" and lower. 836229 and 835928. which side of the washers go against the diaphragm? both mine have the cup side down and it puts a "pucker" in the diaphragm.

The small tapered edge washer goes on the bottom of the diaphragm with the taper down (away from the diaphragm). The larger one does on top with taper up (away from the diaphragm) then six sided washer, split lock washer and nut in that order.
