Is the worm gear removeable from the steering shaft on a 1954 sedan?

My worm gear is in poor condition, and I'm looking to replace it. A fellow '54 owner has one, but the shaft was sawed off about 6 inches from the worm. Not sure if this will be of any use or not...

Another option is Lares, but I have to ship the complete unit to them for rebuild. Does anyone have experience with them?

Thanks,
Dane

Yes. I have even heard of cases where the shaft was slipping out of the worm.
