I changed the coil and the rest to to 12 volts. The spark is so strong it arks all over in the dist. cap..New cap and rotor It back fires through carb. and exhaust..what have I done???

Maybe you should have a dropping resistor between the battery and the pos. terminal on the coil. Maybe you messed up something with the 12 volts?

Most 12volt point systems used a dropping resistor so there was only 6volts on the points. The resistor cuts the voltage in 1/2 at the coil and distributor cap also.

Have you considered reverting back to the correct 6-volts?

Thanks for the information. The ballast resister and a few twiks put it back on the road.
