I have a problem with my 51. It would not start unless fed gas directly into the carb. Installed a new NAPA fuel pump and still no good. Pump was removed and bench tested sucsessfully. Tank was pressurized with line cracked and we got a steady stream. Line from pump to filter was removed and it is open. Pump does not seam to be pumping when installed. Am I missing something? Could my cam have gone suddenly bad? Car ran great until this spring.

GOOD LUCK>>>>ED

I was only wrong one time in my life so far. But that time I was right, and only thought I was wrong....ED

Check to be sure the arm is making contact with the cam.

Have you ever cleaned the tank? I'd be suspicious of the problem being inside the gas tank.

When I pressurized the tank and got good flow at the pump, wouldn't that eliminate a clogged pickup? Also, I had the fuel cap off, so venting shouldn't be an issue. I will try priming the outlet side of the pump, and make sure there are no leaks in my connections. As for the arm making contact, is it possible to install pump with the arm over the lobe?

It is possible to install the arm over instead of under the cam. The lobe must push the arm down. You can damage the arm and possibly the cam. Pull the pump off, prime it then connect the line from the tank and actuate the lever . If it pumps you know the pump is good. If not, replace the pump.

Pressurizing the tank is different than the pump drawing the fuel from the tank. I ran into this on my '50 when I got it going after many years of sitting in a shed. I could pressurize the tank and get fuel to flow out of the line also. I was amazed when I dropped the tank and took out the sender. It was full of mud/rust varnish. I ended up putting a new tank.

It is also possible that the NEW pump is not working. On a recent trip a friends brand new fuel pump on his rebuilt 216 died after 60 miles.

Have you checked the pump with a vacumn gauge, if you have 10 inchs at cranking it should be ok, also check the pressure side. You could also put a hose in a gas can and hook to the pump and see if it will run on that, a good pump should not need to be primed.

See if gas will go through the filter.
