I have a '37 Chevy sedan running a '50 216, which I rebuilt three years ago. New radiator. I consistently have had a problem with the cooling system burbing as the coolant warms. Running a 180 stat; flushed radiator and block and installed new stat two weeks ago in attempt to eliminate problem now described: Engine warms up, heat continues upwards to 212, then the engine burbs -- a rather gurgling expulsion of coolant out the overflow tube -- and then the temperature settles to around 180. Does this in most cases, though I believe it doesn't happen when the radiator is very low. Keep radiator filled just so coolant (water in summer) touches bottom of radiator fill tank. No coolant in the engine oil and hoses are new, (new head gasked when rebuilt) so don't think air is being sucked into the water jacket some how, but I could be wrong. All suggestions considered. Hi Jim,

I would suggest you remove the thermostat and drill a very small hole in it to allow the air to pass through (and water also). This should remove the trapped air that is giving you the problem.

Ray -- Took your advice. It was the simpliest fix I've been able to do in a long time. Thanks for the tip! Jim Leman

While you are at it why not put a mixture of 50-50 coolant in that cooling system, it ain't just anti-freeze any more. Water only should be used for drinking (when there isn't any beer or coffee available) and to wash your baby in, or your blow-up baby Ala Elvira!, which ever is your preference.

I agree with Mrmack. Modern coolant does a lot more but an excess is as bad or worse than not enough. If you use a concentrate read the bottle before pouring it in and mix into a bucket before putting in radiator.

Added a 50/50 mixture today gentlemen; it's getting cold here in the north, so it's time. Usually run a 50/50 but didn't this summer with the coolant burbing out everyday. With the problem now behind me the 34 below mixture in the radiator should hold me through to spring and beyond. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've heard others reccommend drilling a small hole in the thermostat as well.
Here's my silly question, how big is a small hole?
