I knew my "new" 48 had a 55 or newer engine when I bought it. The guy I bought it from was not aware it did not have it's original engine. According to the casting number, the engine is a 55 - 57, 235. The ID stamped behind the coil (toward the cowl)on the boss is FI02A. I imagine the F is for Flint but can anyone tell me what the rest means (please don't just say yes)? Thanks. Beamer

F = Flint
A = from a 3 speed trans. car.
1 = month made (Jan)
02 = day of month.

This system was used from 1957-1962 and does not specify the year.
A 1957 engine will have no motor mount bosses with drilled holes on the side of the block.
What did they use for a front mount? the original 1948 front mount was the same as your 1938 (and rear sides also)

What did they do for the longer water pump?

Beamer -

Glad to see your "New" ride. Sure like my 48!

I have a 62 235 in mine and if its any help, stamped on the boss to the left of the distr is stamped F0205JC and just above the starter the casting date is shown as A 30 2 which is Jan 30, 1962. Sure makes that ol car jump with the 4:11 gears!!

Best to ya and your new girl.

Jim.

A slight mistake in my posting. The FI02A is stamped on a boss just to the left of the distributor, not the coil. The Stove Bolt Casting List shows my block casting number, 3837004, was used in 55-57 cars. With Chevgene's info that the number/letter system, FI02A, was used from 57-62, it appears my engine is a 57 since that is the last year that would have my block number and use this number/letter system.
However, it does have side mounting front motor mounts. Can't tell anything about the water pump. It doesn't appear all that long however, the fan only has about a half inch clearance between it and the radiator. I will post some photos when I have time to take them. That may be a while though as I will be away all next week. Beamer
