OK SO I TOOK MY CAR FOR ITS FIRST DRIVE IN 50 YEARS. ONLY RUNNING WATER AND NO T-STAT, I WENT ABOUT 5 MILES AND SHE GOT WARM. WATER IS CIRCULATING BUT I NOTICED THERE WERE DEFINATELY SOME COLD SPOTS IN THE RAD. SO WHAT DO I TRY TO FLUSH WITH (DONT WANT TO SPRING ANY LEAKS), AND SHOULD I RUN THE T-STAT. THANKS IN ADVANCE

Yep. In the computer world, text in all caps is considered shouting.

Here are some radiator flushing discussions:

No guarantees about not springing leaks though.
I do not use a thermostat on my '30 coupe.

When I had a 1935 Standard a much older than I guy in our local club told me how they fix a cooling problem in the old days. I tried it and I never had an over heating problem again with that car. So here goes:

1. Let the engine warm up.
2. Drain off about a gallon of coolant
3. Pour in a gallon of quality paint thinner for oil based paint. Not todays water soluable "green " stuff
4. Let engine idle for about 15-20 minutes.
5. Drain the radiator by removing the lower hose.
6. Fill to just below the over flow tube with detergent ( liquid Tide )
7. Drive for about 10 minutes
8. Drain all coolant by removing the lower raditor hose ( retain in a container, don't dump on ground )
9. replace hose
10.fill just below the over flow tube with 50% mix of Tide and Water
11.drive for 10 minutes
repeat steps 8,9,10 until coolant is no longer dark / greasy. Usually take 4-6 times
12. Fill with straight water ( preferably non salt softened )
13. Run engine till warm and drain water.
14. Repeat 12, 13 until you are satisfied that the water is running clear of the detergent.

The paint thinner will cut the grease that is insulating the radiator from doing it's job of cooling. The detergent will carry away the sludge. The water will rinse the detergent away.

Hope this is of some help to someone else.
