I'm installing the dash on my '40--the orginal temp.gage had the line cut(or broken w/ about 6-8" missing) --found a n.o.s. on on ebay still in the box (same pt.# )--BUT ---it's face is painted brown-----my orginal is a medium gray !Question --can i take the line off the "new"one to use w/ the old gage or do i try and paint the new one gray??? Point in passing thank's to chevygene and j.y.dog for the grommet sugestion's the electrolock grommet is a bakelite plastic and still working up the nerve to playwith it

There were two color instrument colors in 1940.There was dark brown and tan.After 63 years both colors would have fadded to another color.As the 1940 temp. gauge is rare and you were fortunate to find a new one I would not touch the face-just leave well enough alone.Only the driver will ever notice it  (and me)

Just want to let you know how lucky you were to find a temperature gauge for a 40. I've been trying to find one for a couple months now with no luck. Guess I haven't been checking Ebay often enough.
