Has anyone had any experience with the Universal brand tire on their 4 cylinder. I have a 1928 that will not be driven much but needs new tires. The $99 each price tag on the 450/475-21 looks atractive. I would appreciate any feedback.

Hi 36dlc,

Well....I think I might have driven on all the brands of tires in a 440/450 X 21 inch size, and easily, my favorite is the expensive Goodyear tire, produced here in the US. Best price I can find is a steep 171 dollars per tire. Snyder's Model T parts sells them in the Youngstown area. I buy mine from both Snyders and Bratton's Model A parts, in nearby Maryland.

Now, on my 28 Roadster, I wanted to save a couple of bucks....so, I mounted two Goodyears up front, and had one good Universal tire, so, I purchased one more and mounted them on the back. They are not much fun....I refer to them as my snow tires...very loud, unpleasant to mount, etc...I am not really happy with them.

You get what you pay for in this case.

If I had it to do again, I would not purchase the Universals, I would only cough up the money for the Goodyears. But then, I drive this Roadster a lot, and its really a wonderful car to drive.

If you are only using your 28 occasionally, maybe the Universals will be okay. I think Snyders sells these also, as well as Coker tire, and Universal Tire of Hershey, Pa.

Both Coker and Universal Tire will have large vendor areas at Hershey come this October, you could pick them up in person there.

I use Firestones on my '28s. Mount easily and run well. Bought Universals for my '31 (19") and they were nearly impossible to mount. I would never buy another set! or even one Universal tire!!!

I bought a set of Lucas brand tires. They mounted easily and so far, no road noise. I've traveled under 100 miles so far, but no complaints. The Lucas folks were at a swap meet about 1 year ago and I paid $80 each for the tires.

Here's Justin with the Lucas tires on him: https://vccachat.org/ubbthreads.php/galleries/254235#Post254235

See more about the tires at http://lucasclassictires.com/

Cheers, Dean
