Where can I obtain the special removal tool J1441 to unpin the brake and clutch attachments so I can remove the brake master cylinder? Is there another way? Make a tool? Thanks

Take a piece of heavy wire and make a hook on the end. Then you can take out plug and use hook end to pull pin out. Sometimes it take a couple tries but it will come out with a bit of patience.

Yes It is necessary to do to remove the clutch and brake pedal linkages so the Master cylinder can be removed. Must remove lubrication plug at front (of the car) of Master Cylinder to access it. Lubrication plug has two parts. Might be a zerk fitting in front? Must remove bigger nut to see down hole where pin (actually about a 3/16 inch hole) and I had to use a mirror to see it Put gearshift down, first or third to make it easier to get a wrench in. Is 3/4 nut but just a little more so I had to use a monkey wrench to take it out.

Thanks, I recall Gene and Chipper and just about everyone else posting about this ( someone mention they even had luck with a magnet )...I've got all the brake parts new in the box's, I'm just waiting to clear a spot to tackle this project...I bought some real professional tube bending equipment, so I'm thinking I might really do this right..Until I saw how many bends are involved...whew...! I don't know...All my lines were undercoated from the dealer...But I've noticed one of the rear lines has a indentation that has collapsed the line about half way...has me a little concerned...Perhaps I'll start with that line...

Hi again www.chevsofthe40s.com sells prebent and ends with connectors on. Need special shipping; some of the lines are long; didn't get a set so I don't know all the details

Thanks, Kevin Kevin I do not know if the 41 master cylinder is the same as your 47 but the pin in the 47 is threaded in the midle so you can use a long bolt to extract it. Tip:  Spit the pedals first or you will not have the clearsnce to remove them from the master cylinder if it is still bolted on the car.  Jianis

 Mine took a 10/24 or a 12/24 screw to remove the pin. Also a couple of shots of "Rust Buster" penetrating oil helped in the removal.

Hi The hook worked well. Max diameter of hole is about 11/64. I took a slightly smaller rod and filed down a section about 1/8 from the end. You have the answer to my next (and hopefully last problem) except you say "spit" the two pedals. Obviously a misprint. I can't get the pedals out. Can you be more specific what to do? Take the clutch pedal off of the problem arm connected to the problem arm??? Thanks

The pedals are bolted together, look where they bend to go through the toe board and you will see the bolt/nut.

All the 41 master cylinders I have removed had the threaded key so I have followed Ken's and Jianis advice on removing it. I can not remember if you could just remove the master cylinder by removing the brake line, removing the linkage from the clutch and brake pedals, unbolting the ends of each of the pedals as Don says, and lastly unbolting the master cylinder from the car frame. If I remember correctly you can then take the master cylinder key out on your work bench. Would someone please remind me if this way works? If it does it saves on your neck and isn't so clumsy to work on?

Mike The procedure that you mention is the easiest for removing the pin ( key ). In my first post I was referring to Kevin who asked if it was possible to remove it whilst the master cylinder was still fastened on the car. Jianis

I am a real newbie to doing this work. I have a 1941 5 passenger coupe that I need to replace the master cylinder. Are there any technical manuals available that give a step by step process. The post here are helpful in that they have help me identify parts but the jargon gets me lost.
