On a '47 216 is there a gasket that goes between the block and the back plate of the timing gears (not the timing cover gasket)? I might have lost it, can't find it in my full gasket set.

Yes, there is a very thin gasket that goes at that location.

Check the clearance between thrust plate & gear. It should be not more than .003.

At one time any number of gaskets would be used as the adjusted the clearance of the thrust plate. In the later 1950's the thrust plate came with a loosse inner ring. This privided the correct clearance and only one thin gasket was used. At that time if you bought a new thrust plate for an older engine it came with the loose inner ring.
