I sent my '41 Chevy transmission to be "rebuilt."
I just received a transmission from "Chevs of the 40s." It has '47 stamped on it, and it is painted blue. I expected to receive my '41 casing. Also, there was not an itemized invoice as to replaced parts. I called for an explanation. I was told that the casing was bad and that they do not send out itemized invoices. I was not notified of this situation.
I made it clear, up front, that I was trying to keep the transmission original. A bad attitude ensued with the explanation that I was unreasonable with my requests. Is he right? Help, please. Dan.

It sure makes sense to me that a list of items that they inspect/check/replace/repair should be given to the customer. For example, if you purchase a rebuilt transmission, it is important to know if the synchronizers are in good shape. There are many other important parts in a transmission that need to be checked. I have rebuilt a number of 1940/1948 transmissions and each of the transmissions needed different items replaced. Another call to Chev's of the 40's might be in order. Since they get $400 for the rebuild, at least they can provide you will some information.

Unfortunatly their catalog list the rebuilding cost of a 1941-48 3 speed at $400 plus parts.(thats $200 @ hour). they probably have a stock of rebuilts and just do an exchange.Would be better if they would just list the unit as "rebuilt-exchange $650.00.As far as getting the original case back-often the cluster or reverse idler shaft holes in the case were worn, requiring a new case,

I agree that an exchange service should be identified as such. I've seen all kinds of engines and trannys described as "rebuilt" that only have just enough work done to return to service for a short time and fail again because of reused faulty parts. You have no idea of the work done to the unit sent to you, and as stated you expected your gear box back. I have been collecting a complete set of NOS gears and shafts etc. for my rebuild (ebay hunting). Why use used when new will do. I'd be inclined to ask for a return of the gear box you sent and send the exchange unit back if Chevs of 40s can offer no better customer service then that. A quality rebuild service is up always up front and honest with out a take it or get lost attitude.
