To my knowledge the thermostat was an option only in 31 but if you can track down the parts it would not hurt to put 1 in just the same.

There was no thermostat installed in 1931 with the exception of cars with an accessory heater.

A thermostat can easily be installed. Just buy one for a small block Chevy engine and install it between head and outlet. If you use a thick gasket you don't need to countersink the edge of the thermostat. Some heads already have a countersunk ledge for the thermostat.

Thanks to all.
in the Land Down Under we do not need a thermostat for cold starts, however is a restrictive device advisable to force water circulation to the rear cylinders.
We tend to have over heating problems here,
