Has anyone seen or used the product? It is also applied in colors and may be an alternative for bumpers and grills. > Chrome paint

A buddy recently used a chrome paint product similar to this on his '33 Ford street rod grill. It came out looking nice, but IMHO looked less shiny that that shown in the video. I would say it looked close to chrome, but not chrome. It is much better than the rattle can chrome product though. He went the chrome paint route because the grill was too pitted and rusted to chrome without mega-bucks in repair cost.

Both methods I’ve seen are applied over a polished black surface and as one is sprayed as a base coat clear coat, this one is sprayed with some kind of (I'm assuming) metallic chemical and immediately washed with water.

I will check with our paint rep. tomorrow on this.

I work with stained glass and do some glass fusing and I use a glass that is specially coated with a flip-flop metallic film called Dichroic (very, very expensive) and I'm wondering if this is a similar process.

Interesting indeed. I wonder how durable it is?

At least one of the processes uses silver nitrate to deposit metallic silver on the surface. The silver will tarnish so must be covered with a clear UV resistant coating. It takes a dual spray gun to dispense the water based silver and conversion solutions. Can be applied directly on glass (it is one way to make a mirror) or metal but needs a barrier coat (black paint) for many plastics. Plastics can be etched producing a rough surface without barrier coat. Also the surface being coated needs to be properly prepared so the result is the desired smooth reflective surface.

Other "chrome" paints are aluminum in a clear (or tinted) base.

Maybe the rattle can chrome paint has improved in the past two or three years. About that long ago I used one and the result looked great - until you touched it. It marred and smudged easily which looked awful.
