My u-joints went out on my car.

What else should I check out on the car ?

transmission or propeller shaft ?

Hi and welcome to Chevy Chat. You have come to the correct place to get the proper answers to your questions about original conditions. Non stock operations are not our forte.

I assume the only U-joint is what went out. You will need to break open the ball joint and see what the problem is. It could be the drive line or an axle.

While the drive line is broken(taken apart)check the front drive line bushing and seal. Now may be the time to replace it while you have it apart.

I pulled the ball joint and u-joints have play.I could take off capscrews by hand .

How can you check out the propeller shaft ? can I spin tires and look down the torque tube?

If you can noticeably move the shaft up and down or side to side then the bushing is worn and needs to be replaced.

bad news !!!

I remove differential housing cover and check out inside and found that driver side of differentail bearing bolts where coming out.The ring gear has been hitting housing and metal is everywhere.

what should I do with rear end ?

I would look for a new rear end and make a transplant.

You can but if it comes from a manual transmissison car the gear raio will be 4:11, you now have either 3:70 or 3:55.

The best ratio is the 3.70 the sticks were born with.
The Power Glide 3.55 is only 5% slower engine speed which would be 3 MPH at 65 MPH.
The 3.55 was better for the P.G. as there was a constant slippage of about 3% in the torque converter at higher speeds.

count teeth on ring gear. count teeth on pinion, divide.
