Greetings to all! I have recently acquired another wonderful ol' Chevy - this time a 1920 "490" Touring. I have scanned the pages of this forum and don't believe they have been addressed prior to this post. If they have, I apologize. Here they are: (1) The hubcaps on the front of our car have the "Chevrolet" on them. The two on the back wheels are plain (no "Chevrolet" on them). Is this correct? (2) There are what appears to be two petcocks on the side of the oil pan. What function do they have? (3) Does anyone have a suggestion for how to clean and what to put on the wooden spokes of the wheels? Thanks very much for all your help!!! - The Ol' Coach

The correct hubcaps for a 1920 four ninety have the chevrolet Script , with the bowtie and a stippled background. This is for all 4 wheels.
The two pet cocks are described in the owners manual as upper and lower oil level petcocks."when full oil will begin dripping from the upper petcock"
My person understanding of all 490 wooden spoke wheels is that they where all painted black originally at the factory. I tend to cringe a bit at the beautifully varnished wooden felloes and spokes. BUT i am am open to any corrections on the painted spokes.

# 1 The front hub caps w/o any script would fit the 1916/17. # 2 As Jack informs: You open the upper cock and fill engine oil until it comes out of that petcock. If no oil comes out when the lower cock is open, the engine oil level is dangerous low. Refill at once. Those petcocks on my car have been replaced with tubes before I bought the car, also to be able to pre-lubricate the oil pump before starting. http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/...CA/?action=view¤t=P1100245.jpgI also have got a dip stick to check the oil reservoir. http://s889.photobucket.com/albums/...CA/?action=view¤t=P1100267.jpg

I agree with the petcock and hubcap info. The spoke wheels were always painted black when leavng the factory. The first "natural finish" wood spoke wheels were in 1928.

Also , the steel band around the outer wood felloes were a silver colour, and the demountable rim was also a silver colour.

Ol' Coach - The correct 1920 brass hubcaps w/ "Chevrolet script, bowtie and stippled background" are very hard to find. My car was missing one, and it took me a couple years to track one down. Be aware that later 490's came with a larger coarse axle thread and those won't fit a 1920. I can't find my notes but I believe you need a 2-1/8" NF thread. Don in Ridgway
