Does anyone know where I can find 3:55 or 3:73 gears to upgrade my 4:11's? I have been reading on the site about all you guys who have changed out the gears and get a much better highway experience, but I am not sure what kind of gears or where I can find them.
Any help is appreciated from a first time restorer.
Thanks,
Todd

I believe a powerglide rear end has been used if you can find one. Patricks has gear sets for sale but hold on to your wallet.

You might try Hemmings Magazine on the web. There was a salvage yard near NYC that was scrapping out '50-54 chevys a while ago. He was asking $100.00. each. driving

I originally planned on getting 3.55 gears for my 37 but the cost was just way too high for my budget so the 8 inch I had in stock and the 65 dollar T-5 went in and much happier.

Yup! I agree! the prices are really steep. That's why I just buttoned it back up and will deal with the 4:11's for a while. Besides, I have a lot of other parts to purchase first!
Thanks Guys!

OCN,

After several years of wrangling with the question of substituting a 3:55 or a 3:73 in to my 41, I settled on the 3:55. After acquiring a couple of them, I'm now starting to wonder about the wisdom of my decision. That's because, unless the power is increased from a regular 216, I think the trade off of gear to power reaches its peak at a lower speed. The lesser ratio of the 3:73 may allow the engine to do a better job overall when considering hills and level terrain.

I don't really know. Nonetheless, I think in hindsight that I would recommend you install a 3:73 rather than a 3:55 if your horsepower is to stock remain 85. You only have so much pulling power.

As Gene has pointed out several times you can get a 3:73 from any straight drive 53 or 54.

Your call and good luck with your decision,

I had a few questions myself about my "rear end" I don't get the low dragged out whistles I used to get when I pass a group of women in the local shopping mall, like I used to get.
Soo I thought I would try to change the ratio of eye contact to rear end jiggle....I am undecided as to get a full rear end transplant or just silicone implants.....Money is no object here, the main thing here is the attraction to some folks of the possibility of performance. Any idea's ????. Charlie.???...ED

I was only wrong one time in my life so far. But that time I was right, and only thought I was wrong....ED

OCN,
That's right.

Eastern Ed,
Have you gone complete loco? I read your latest post here and it makes no sense a-tall. Mercy!
