I have a 1941 Chevy pasenger car with a problem "down shifting from 3rd into second" gear. The transmission has recently been professionally overhauled, including a NOS synchronizer assembly. I am using GL-5 gear lubricant. I have about 250 miles on the car since the overhaul. The vacuum shift assembly has been adjusted according to the 1941 Chevrolet Shop Manual instructions, but I can't get it to downshift without grinding. Upshifting works just fine. Any suggestions?

Hi Roys41, Welcome to Chevy Chat II. We are glad you stopped by. If you have additional questions, just post them here and we will attempt to answer them for you. Your shifting problem may be because the idle speed is adjusted too high. Try lowering the speed and give it a test run. You may also have a bad syncro on the 2nd gear.

Roys41, On down shifting, you must first mash the clutch. Just kidding. What Ray said makes sense. I'm thinking that the clutch adjustment may contribute to the problem also, but not sure about that. Solution: Just forget about shifting down to second. Use third (drive) and those brakes, instead. Not a good solution, I admit. The transmission rebuild/overhaul may be lacking in some respect. Just saying... I hope you find the problem. And soon. 41s  should not be driven around with the gears a-scraping like a 38  or some other ancient floor-shifting critter. Welcome aboard. Charlie

Well About downshifting, the Chevrolet six doesn't need to be driven like a sports car or a rice rocket, there should rarely be a need to downshift to second unless you are on one heck of an up grade and the six won't pull the grade, mainly the engine will have enough torque to keep a decent speed in high gear, and accelerate once the grade flattens out a bit.

Welcome to chat Roy41, glad to have another 41 here. I've owned and driven many 41's since I was 15 and you can't just jamb the shifter from 3rd to 2nd without a little crunch. Try this, shift to neutral let out the clutch rapidly and push it back in, at the same time blip the throttle. This will get the gear set turing to match the second gear which is turning at road speed. Then ease the shifter into 2nd it should slide in with no noise or restriction. If not it's time to go back to the rebuilder. After you master "double clutching" you get a feel for your engine speed relative to road speed and you won't need to do it. In fact I can shift my 41 up and down without using the clutch at all just "matching the gears" Jay
