What is best oil for this? Is 90W gear oil for the rear the stuff to use or is there something else?

This is a simple home brew. #90 will be too thin. If it were me I would add some #90 an some chassis grease. The #90 will flow into the bushing and bearings and tend to leak but the chassis grease will slowly mix in and thicken the oil.

If you have a John Deere dealer close by you can buy JD Cornhead Grease. Just make sure whatever you buy is "self leveling" grease. Unthinned chassis and bearing grease are too thick and will cavity out. I haven't used Gene's recipe but I'm sure that will work as well.

After looking around, the corn head seems to be the way to go. Thanks.

90wt was the proper lubricant for years, at some point GM went to chassis grease due to leakage of the 90wt. So at that point chassis grease would be correct but as mentioned it does not move into the tight clearances in the bushings. I have been filling the gear box to near the top, adding 90wt to that and feel that it works fine. I rebuilt the box about 4 years ago. talk

I recently rebuilt 2 steer boxes, 1 of them for my Chev. I found a Castrol "grease" that poured from the can but will have to get into the shed to find the can for the details.

I have used Gene's idea. I premixed the 90 weight oil with the chassis grease in a glass measuring cup until I liked the thick consistency. The stirring breaks down the grease. Good luck, Mike

I finally got into the old shed and looked at the grease tin (Caltex EP C00) not Castrol is on the label, it only comes in 2.5 kg can down here.
