I think you are on to something Dave--I'll make that my project this weekend and get back to you with the results--kinda makes sense now that I think more about the noice which could be related to the jerkiness of the clutch release (dry throwout bearing).

From my experiance the T.O. bearing will give off a high pitched squeal when dry but it will not affect the clutch action. It will take a month for the heavy gear oil to soak through to the graphite bearing surface.

The surface of the flywheel and condition of clutch plate affect jerkiness of the clutch not the throwout bearing.

You said that you had replaced the side engine mounts and trans. mount. How about the front mounts? Did you adjust the trans. mount? All this plays a big part on clutch chatter and grabbing. If you can, replace the front mounts, providing you haven't already, and adjust the trans. mount. It's in the manual how to do it. I went through this problem like you are now. Only I put a NOS clutch plate back in. All this might help with the rough release. Also,I had to re adjust the through out bearing release sleeve. That's is in the manual also. But like it was said earlier in this thread, be sure all bolts and nuts are tight too. Hope this helps.

Hey Dave,
This one I have in there now, I found on e-bay. Maybe someone here will chime in where to get one. Or maybe Chevy's of the 40's might have one. Good Luck,

Update: I had a rather enjoyable weekend getting to the throw-out bearing to lubricate it--all went well and after letting it marinate for a day and another clutch adjustment, took her for a spin--the noise was gone and most of the jerkiness was also gone--I would say that the only problem is shifting down into 2nd where I'm getting a little bit of shaking. Overall, I would say all is good except maybe about 5%. My thanks to everyone for helping with this issue--I've really got a better understanding of all the related issues in the clutch function. Couldn't have done without your help!!

I've had broken springs in the clutch plate affect jerkiness...but this falls under condition of clutch plate...and not something your bound to miss.

There are several problems with clutch plate and flywheel that can cause jerkiness. Rust and lubricant contamination are probably the top two. Hard spots in the flywheel, broken springs on pressure plate are probably next. Then there are some that are relatively rare (rodent nests among them).
