I have tried several options to seal the universal joint ball at the rear without success. I've used the cork seal, an oring and also a quad ring. Also I'm using the 600 wt gear oil. Some members advise they are running straight chassis grease which may be my next attempt, but I would like to hear some opinions from other members. Perhaps Gene's steering gear lube recipe would work.

How much oil are you putting in the "U" joint housing?

About 8 ounces when drained. After that it's a guess by the size of the puddle underneath. Is there a way to check the level? Such as removing the speedo drive gear and filling to runout? I did have the prop shaft bushing seize to the shaft at one time so I would rather be overfilled than under. The bushing and seal were replaced and the shaft built up to due to wear.

There should only be a max. of 1/2 pint of oil in the "U" joint housing.

I would advise not to use chassis grease as it does not flow well enough to properly lubricate the U-joint trunnions.

Thanks JYD for confirming that 8 ounces (1/2 pint) is the correct amount.
