when you set the timing should the pointer on the bell housing line up with the ball on the flywheel if it doesnt what do you do to get it to line up do I lift the distributor out and move it can anybody direct me to a chat session on engine timing

When the pointer lines up with the ball it tells you that #1 piston is at top dead center. That is your starting point.

You may not have to remove the distributor. Loosen the clamp around the base of the distributor and move the distributor to place the arrow on the ball in the window. Tighten the clamp screw. The octane selector should be on -O- when these changes are made.

 But so is number 6. It, though, instead of being TDC compression stroke, will be TDC the exhaust stroke, if the timing is set properly. And, yes, that is nitpicking.  Charlie
