the P/O had removed the doors and rear of the cab on my 31 pickup. so what did they have between the rear of the door opening and the door post area under the door. was it wood or was it a metal piece and did it set on the splash apron

Are you asking about any metal cover for the main sill between the bottom of the front and rear door posts? If so, yes there is a metal sill cover that covers the outer part of the sill under the door.
