Can anyone offer a detailed explanation of how to install glass into a roadster or touring 1932--1935 windshield frame ?

The metal frame is narrower at the bottom by 2 inches , than the top.

Thank you, 9AM monday morning i called the AACA and spoke to matt hocker. Unfortunatly the VCCA literature is in the basement and scheduled to be moved upstairs middle of the month. I gave them my info and what i am after information wise and they will contact me end of month.

I do not know if the roadsters and touring that were made by chevrolet and not by fisher body have their own specific literature produced by GM ??? anybody know ?

So i will wait until they have moved everything and are settled.

1935 CHEVROLET ROADSTER that was sold from maryland or deleware area on ebay last fall, are you the buyer a member here ?

THANK YOU>>>>>>>>>> !

On my 36 Phaeton windshield, the right hand end piece and bottom piece to the windshield are separate parts. You can easily see the joints. It looks like they both would just come off with a little persuasion, then you could slip the glass in or out. The old glue or sealer would probably be rock hard though, so you would likely shatter the old glass in the process. Mine is a few inches wider than a 35 due to the wider body.

I viewed the VCCA library back in 2009 before it was sent to the AACA. Unfortuantely, the content of the collection was mostly newer stuff and a lot of the literature was also reprint. While the collection did have some way cool dealer's albums and other neat related items, the collection was far from complete, especially for the open cars.

Refresh my memory on your 1936 phaeton, i believe it was discussed on this site some time back.
Does your windshield frame have 4 metal sides to it....top, bottom , L & R sides, like a holden bodied auzzie . Or 3 ONLY sides L&R and top like a usa built chevrolet. ????

Is this a USA built body or australian >?

My 35 chevrolet roadster has 3 pieces to the windshield frame and the sides are welded to the top part of the frame, the frame is essentially one piece.

JUNKYARD ...I was also hoping that somebody on this chat would have the original literature from chevrolet and offer to copy a few pages for me on the subject.

I have the reprint from crank and hope of the BODY SERVICE MANUAL 1933--1936 of the FISHER BODY. Which is fine for my 35 std coupe but not for my 35 roadster.

I will have to see what they come up with?

Mike,
I emailed three scanned pages from the 1929-36 Body Parts List. They show part numbers and also have illustrations of windshield frame parts. It is the best I have found so far. Had to find your email in the VCCA database as it is not listed in your ChatII profile. Another benefit of VCCA membership.

bingo, chipper is the man .!!!!!!! comes up with 3 pages of windshield parts from an original parts book with illustrations.!!! EXACTLY what the doctor ordered. Now i can see exactly what i am after in my continuing search for the correct parts.

Off to a photo copier to have these 3 pages enlarged by 25--50 % so i do not need magnifying glass to read part numbers to match up to the pictures.

BIG TIME THANK YOU TOO CHIPPER.

Hey Chip! What pages are you talking about? I've got that early 37 parts book that I bought from you, is that the same? I also have a 35 body parts book.

I had the 3 sheets printed out on the 12 x 18" size paper and everything is better to read. I made 3 copies of each one. One for writing notes on as a working copy.

The 36 has 4 parts. Top, bottom and 2 sides. Chassis seems to be US built, or at least full of US parts, and best I can tell the body was built in Sao Paulo, Brazil. They have had a full fledged manufacturing and assembly plant there since the late 20's.

Bruce,
The book is No. 2 in the set of 4 published Nov. 15, '36 and then again July '37. Those have the best illustrations of all the parts books from the early 6 cylinder era. The '45 version of the '29-'42 parts book is also a great one to have.

the north american 32--35 chev roadster tourings were built by chevrolet and the windshield had only 3 sides with the bottom not having a frame side.

No idea about 1936 and if it has a 4 sided windshield frame that would be like the GM holden bodied in australia tourings.

Is there any tags on the car to say it was built in brazil, or anything for australia. North american built `1932--35 roadster/tourings had the build plate attached on the floor in front of the seat.

I think you had said before that you had found 6 of them ( 1936 tourings ) so far. What do the owners of these other 5 cars say about manufacturer plates and info ??

Mike:
The body has major differences from the Holden Body. If you recall, I had posted the build plate photo, which had previously unseen body style. It did not give a plant of origin, but did say " GM EXPORT DIVISION", just does not mention where from, or where to. That is the firewall plate. The one on the floor is quite worn, and has traces of the "FC" and a few numbers.
I have found two others, and taken detailed photos. Neither has a build plate, serial number plate, or any other ID. The current owners did not restore them, and know nothing of the history. The Crestline books 60 (and the update 70) years of Chevrolet, have the most complete information I have yet found. The widow of the man who restored one of the others confirms that they believed it to have been built in Brazil. The owner of the other was told that 7 were built, and he thought he had the only one. Guess I spoiled his day. I have contacted the VP of public affairs for the Brazil plant to see if they have any archives. No word yet.
All three are identical in appearance (except hinges explained below) to the photo in the Crestline book, which is considerably different from the Holden built bodies that are pictured on the same page, or from the ones I have found on Google. One of the restored ones has exposed hinges on the doors, while mine and the other one have hidden hinges. The exposed ones may have been added in the restoration, but there is no way to tell yet. Other than that, they are identical to mine.
The Brazil plant was a complete Chevrolet plant, and was capable of manufacturing all or part of any Chevrolet of the era. There are some early 30's photos of their truck assembly operations on the internet.
PS - All three have 4 edged windshield frames with bolt on supports like early 30's American. The Holden had supports as body integrated A pillars very similar to American 36's, with a tilt out glass.

Got them.......looks to be great car to begin restoration with.

From what i can see these parts appear to be the same as used on 1932---1935 chevrolet roadsters and tourings built by chevrolet body works......not fisher body.

Windshield other than being 4 sides to it appears the same as a 1932--1935, door hinge system are also the same as 32--35. The metal piece under the windshield frame looks like the 1932 -35 open car type as would be the stop glass rubber and the below the metal strip rubber. It looks just like the 1932--1935 USA chevrolet built roadster and touring body and hardware.

Yes. I went there in late April and took about 100 pictures of it.
It is in the private family part of the museum.

Before the VCCA library was shipped off to the AACA, the use of the library was free to the members of the VCCA.

Yes JUNKYARD DOG, thats what i thought too by an earlier post by somebody in this thread. I was surprised by the email i received yesterday morning.

If you contact me ( mike350@rogers.com ) i will forward it too you. If the materials were donated with the free search criteria stipulation to VCCA members , then somebody has changed the playing field this year to a pay for service.
To that i give them the finger salute !
