I am looking for the specialty tool shown in the service manual for removing steering wheel for my '37 Master Deluxe. I have attempted to remove by drilling and tappnig the horn prong holes and using standard wheel puller without success. I have tried to fabricate a tool but succeeded only in chipping the wheel hub. If anyone has this special steering wheel puller I would be interested in renting it for a couple of days. I will also pay shipping. I am in northeastern Illinois. I am a VCCA member. Hi Jim
I had similar problem with my 38 but eventually won the battle. While using the holes you mentioned may not be the correct way they do a wonderful job. Loosen but not remove the nut in the centre of the wheel, fit the puller into place and do it up fairly tight but not to strip the holes out, give the shaft a good spray of wd40 or similar penetrant and leave it to soak overnight. Next morning give the end of the puller several reasonable hits with a claw or similar weight hammer. The first attempt may not work but each time you go past give it a few hits and a spray.
The wheel fits onto a tappered shaft with a key for good measure, these tend to grow together over the years. Dont hit or tighten too much or the end of the shaft will look like a mushroom creating more headaches for you.

Fellas -- Removed my '37 steering wheel this weekend -- finally. In the end, I used a bearing splitter/puller device that fit nicely around the steering column and up flush against the base of the steering wheel hub to remove the wheel. I threaded the puller component into the two threaded holes in each side of the slitter halves, set up a puller and with an air ratchet popped the wheel off. I will have photos of this tool installed to show for anyone who is struggling to remove this wheel from their car. Also removing and rebuilding Dubonnet knees so will have information on that as I go.
