I am restoring a 1937 Chevy ½ ton pickup - can anyone tell me how to remove the glove box locking mechanism so I can refinish the door?

If you have the original key, put the key into the lock.
Just inside the door on the lock body you will see a small slot.
In that slot should be a small rectangular pin. Push the pin in and the lock should either come out or turn it until it does.
It is a lot easier to show this in person.

I do not have a key and the ignition key does not work. I have been able to pick the lock both the open and locked position. Will I be able to remove the lock using the pick? The rectangular pin you are referring to - is that the bar that moves up and down to lock and unlock?

The pin that needs to be pushed in is at the back of the cylinder next to the door.
On a cylinder, when you have the key and want to install it, the rear most pin (not tumbler) is pushed into the cylinder and then you insert the key.
This holds the lock pin in, until you install the cylinder.
Then you pull out the key and this pin locks the cylinder in place.
Wish I had an old one to take a picture of.

Not trying to be a smart patootie but wouldn't loosening the nut have something to do with it? That's not the same set up as my '38 coupe but I'd try loosening the nut and see what happens.

I have a 36 pickup, and was successful in removing my lock from the door when I re-did my interior, but I can't remember exactly how it comes apart. Mine looks exactly like yours.

Try this...a quote I found from a 2009 Chat posting:

"The locksmith picked my lock the other day but couldn't remove the lock. He made a key and figured out how. With the lock in the unlocked position, pinch the spring on the pawl with your thumb, turn the lock to about the 11;00 position and pull the barrel out. Only then can you pull the pawl and remove the lock body."

Thanks all for your input. I think i am getting close. I loosened the nut and found the rectangle pin on the door side of the locking mechanism. I tried to push it in but was not able to with minimum pressure. I was hoping that I would not have to pay a lock smith for a key.
