Can anybody advise what the max clearance should be between the timing gear teeth on a 1928 car. Mine are noisy and I can get a 30 thou gauge between the teeth. Also, the crank gear is fibre, I thought this should be steel on a 28? The cam gear is 13/16 wide which is correct for year, anyone got any ideas. Also has anyone noticed the small hole (I assume breather) in upper surface of timing cover, it is in a stupid place as when removing bottom hose from water pump or when pump leaks it fills lower part of timing cover with water. Can this be blocked off or will this cause pressure.

Any advice would be most welcome

Many thanks Spokedwheel (UK)

Not sure about the 28,but my 37 the crank gear is steel and the cam gear is fibre. If I remember right clearance sould be around .002 to .005.I can say for sure .030 is to much.

For a 1928 engine, the running clearance for the steel crankshaft gear to fibre camshaft gear is from zero backlash for new gears to 0.012",which is the factory recommendation clearance for replacement.

If your crank gear is fiber then you must be working on a 1927 engine?

Yes checked the part no on the gear and it seems in the past somebody has fitted earlier crank gear. Engine is a late 28 as 848532 and R4874150.

You should change the crank gear to the metal one. The cam gear is fiber.
