Well guys in my last post I talked about pulling the harmonic balancer off my 54 truck engine and taking the one off my 54 car engine and switching them to gain the narrow pulley that I want to use. There is a slight groove from the seal and what I want to know is how much of a groove is acceptable before I have to sleeve it. The other thing is that in my Chevy repair manual they talk about a special alignment tool when you are putting on the cover. Has anybody come up with a menthod to use without that tool? Thanks in advance for any help.

Go to your local Flaps and get a speedi-sleeve. This will take care of the groove in your balancer. Have the parts store look up the seal and then they can get you the correct repair sleeve. Don

As for how to align timing cover w/o the factory alignment tool, I've read somewhere to install the cover loosely, then install the harmonic balancer, and allow the balancer hub to seat around the seal before tightening the timing cover bolts. this allows for the correct alignment of the seal to the balancer hub. Haven't tried it yet...but sounds like it should work...Good Luck.
