Hey Everyone, this novice mechanic needs some help! I am stripping the dash out on my #2 (parts car) '37 Chevy. All kinds of goodies! A De Luxe heater, cigarette lighter and ash tray, "clock" glove box door, and all good knobs, etc! Have everything out except H20 temp gauge. Cannot figure how the line disconnects from gauge! Even took the gauge out of the I-panel and still cannot figure it. I really don't want to cut it if I can help it; and besides; I would like to know how to replace one if I ever need too! Never too much knowledge!!! It has a small (1/16"?) copper line betwwen the sending unit in engine block, thru the firewall to the gauge. At the gauge end, there are two small round "bumps" - soldered maybe(?) to a square plug or fitting which goes thru into gauge. The sending unit end is just down in the block with a threaded pipe plug to hold it. i would like to get this apart at gauge so I can store this I-panel for future use. Can anyone point me in right direction? Thanks! tim

Slim T,
The heat gauge comes as a complete unit. Remove the bulb from the head carefully and slide it back through the dash, it should fit through the hole in the firewall (dash). You can roll the tubing up in about a six inch or larger cicrle and then store it. Make sure you remove the gauge from the instrument panel first for ease of removal of the tubing from engine compartment, Hope this helps.

Thanks Walt, Removed rubber cable grommet from firewall and the sending unit passed right thru. rolled it up and added it to my "good" spare parts pile! I guess not everything comes apart. even my dad knew the answer to that one. He was motor pool mechanic WWII - Luzon, Phillipines. Thanks, Tim

HI SlimT.

You might be aware of this, but check out these pages, they talk about R&R on temp gauge, and repair of the bourdon tube:

Just thought you'd be interested.
