Since the subject seems to be '38 right now I have a question. What does the '38 4 door Master Sport Sedan spare tire retainer look like? The spare sits up against the back of the trunk and there was some sort of metal retainer that was bolted (?) into a curved metal piece that is welded to the top of the trunk.

When I bought the car it didn't have a spare and this has been bothering me for some time. I have a metal piece that looks like a small Jai-alai scoop with a flattened handle that could be the retainer but I don't have the bolt/wing nut or whatever to attach it. Any pictures would be great.

Thanks,
Brian

1038-39 spares were moumted verticly against the back of the trunk.A long stud secured the plate to the car.The hole for it should be at top center of the spare tire. The bolt has a 7/16-20 thread and is 2 3/16 long with a 3/4 hex on the end so it can be tightened with the lug nut wrench.

I will email a photo in a day or two. Can't do it tonight. Sounds like you have the right hardware.

I hope that I have the right hardware but when I bought the car it had a jack from the 70's. It was one of those bumper jacks with the hook that stuck in the hole in the bumper and a small pad to prevent scratching of the chrome. With those 70's jacks they sometimes had a curved piece of metal that was used with the jack and, I think, looks like my Jai-alai piece but it has been a long time and I can't remember what they looked like exactly.

Thanks for your help,

Brian

Thanks Chevnut, as soon as I see a photo of what it is supposed to be I can verify what I have and I'll let you know.

Thanks 38chevguy and chevnut I do have the right part. Even when I see it on the car it still doesn't look right somehow but my part looks just like the one in the photo.

Thanks again,
Brian
