Hello jay d and welcome to Chevy Chatter!

You'll find answers to most any question you have about your '31 on this site.

I'll try to help with some of your questions. Going in reverse order of your posting, here are some people/firms which make wood replacements for your pick up. I've not had any personal experiences with any of them, but others in the VCCA, and on this site, have.

As for the brakes, it may be a simple matter of not having the proper linings. These old mechanical systems required a "soft" woven lining. The hard linings used with hydraulic systems simply won't cut it on the mechanical systems. You can get these linings at industrial friction/brake shops, or, you can have them relined properly by contacting The Filling Station.

Besides having the proper linings, the brake linkages need to be adjusted correctly. The Repair Manual (also available from The Filling Station) explains how this is done. By the way, when adjusted properly, with the correct linings, the braking system works just fine. So don't let anyone tell you it is necessary to "upgrade" to an hydraulic one.

And, as an added bonus to owning a '31, check out this site:

http://1931chevrolet.com/

It is run by our own Chevy Chatter webmaster, Bill Barker, and has loads of good info.

Once again, welcome, and Happy Motoring,

Dan

Hi Jay D
I also have a 1931 pickup. I can help as much as my technical ability will help. I am also fairly new to this site having bought my pickup last year. There are plenty of people on this site who are gracious enough to answer any question you might have.
Regards,
Lee

badsix,
If you go to Bill Cartwright's (KC Wood) website and click on customer projects you will find two pickup cabs pictured. Your wood will be essentially the same as both. Actually about 1/2 the wood parts are the same as the '33. The other ones don't differ much. If you have woodworking skills the parts are not that tough to replicate.

thanks to everyone this sounds like a great form. its going to make working on my 31 a lot of fun.doing it yourself is the best part.
so is there any place i can get drawings of the wood pieces so i can make them myself. a lot of the wood is still intack but some are not. i think i can use the complete pieces as a patern. i have access to a wood shop and two guys thst can build the imposible. ( i work for an ocean going tug boat co. and the owner likes to restore old cars and tug boats there is lots of wood in a tug boat )
thanks agin jay d

Not drawings or blueprints. You will have to use the metal parts to get the patterns for outside cuts. It is not nearly as much of a problem as you might think. If you have doubts about a part them make a test piece from pine and when you get it like you want then duplicate in hardwood.
