OK, as you all know I am in the process of trying to rebuild a 1930 Chevrolet AD Universal - Canopy Express Truck and i am looking for a carb, as that is one thing that I did not find in my parts collection sent to me. I know that the 1930 Chevrolet AD came with a Carter RJH-08 150s from the factory, in talking with the Carb Gods arouns they say this is not the best carb, and it is also expensive to get & maintain. What would be a good replacement carb ?? Once it is up and running i plan on driving it occassionly, not a daily driver, just a day or two a month around town, and maybe a short weekend trip to stretch its legs.

Notice a stromberg part # 14-16 out there, and they seemed pretty cheap, is this an option ?? also was told about needing an adaptor for the 30 degree angle on the carb, any factory adaptors out there or ??

Actually, the Carter 150-S is a great carburetor! It is not complicated, just about any part needed is now available and the Carter is easy to work on if you have the correct tools. It is easy to maintain as well. The aftermarket carbs. are more difficult to work on and parts (like repair kits for example) are almost impossible to obtain.

Yes, a restored Carter 150-S is expensive to purchase, however, it is basically a trouble-free carburetor and since parts are so readily available you will save in the long run. Also, the original 1930 air cleaner will fit on the Carter since that is the carburetor that the air cleaner was designed for. And, you don't need an adaptor for the Carter either. With some of the aftermarket carbs. an adaptor is required. I highly recommend that you go with the Carter carburetor.

While going original is always the best advice, I found a NOS Tillotson on eBay 2 years ago for $50 and it hooked up and works perfectly on my '31 Coach. I will eventually seek out a rebuilt Carter (once I have $400+ to spare), but meantime the Tillotson will have to do.

What is the number of the Tillotson you used? Will the original air cleaner work with it?

This is one that I saw out there, said it was for a 32-36
Stromberg Carburetor #14-16. Stromberg #14-16

Looks like it has some sort of adapter plate ?? these any good or would it even work, I am going to go with the Carter on my final restore also need to come up with the $$ for that guys as well. just wondering if this would work to get by as can get them rebuilt ready to go for under $75.

Any thoughts ??

The '30 Chevrolet uses an updraft carburetor not a downdraft as the Stromberg pictured. You can replace the manifolds for one from a '33 or '32 and use a downdraft on your '30 head. Otherwise you are better finding an original updraft Carter or one of the diecast replacements (Marvel, Tillotson, Johnson).

I think it is a Tillotson JR5, and it came with a spacer/shimming ring to enable use of the original air cleaner, although some tinkering is needed. Accelerator pedal hooks up fine, and Choke/Throttle cables also are able to be used although are at slightly different angle than the Carter unit.
