Voltage Reducer Hello, I just converted my vehicle to 12v, but I would like to connect my clock and have it working. does' anyone know or can point me to a voltage reducer that will work on the clock to make it 6v again?

A series resistor doesn't work on a clock as the current draw is not constant. Therefore, you will need to purchase a voltage reducer to perform this job. They are available from the Filling Station and COT40s.

Nazario, Some folks find it difficult to understand why anyone feels a need to convert from 6 to 12 volt system. It's a frequently debated topic on this chat. Having made the conversion several times myself it's not rocket science but it requires a careful approach or you won't get accurate gauge readings. What you need to purchase is a IVR, insrument voltage regulator. Most classic car parts suppliers have them with instuctions for install. Examples are Blue Streak #VRC603 or Radio Shack #270-1562. Marx Parts or fifth Avenue Auto Supply or Chevs of the 40's are good sources. An excellent book on the subject is How to Restore Automotive Electrics by Forbes Aird. DFC

DFC Bingo...That and the fact that some of us just have this "preservation" stuff in our veins...We tend to get a little miffed that you didn't come and seek guidance as to your problem with a perfectly good 6 volt system before you went and ripped it all out...Fear not, we are still here to lend a helping hand...Then again you could try posting over at the H.A.M.B. they have more expertise in this conversion stuff...

Thank you MrMack, as far as the 6volt, it would not turn over the rebuilt motor, so I went with 12volts.

Nazario, Is 6v clock an "electric" clock that runs on 6v all the time, or is it a 6v "wind up" clock that has a 6v motor that winds up a spring driven clock. If it is a wind up clock, then a series resistor type voltage reducer may work. I dunno, I'm sure that someone can give more accurate input. Rather than take a chance on burning up the clock, I would connect it to the safest, most constant voltage source that I could find. Here is another supplier of 12v-6v voltage reducers. It is probably the one that I will buy if I ever get my 6v wiper motor and transmission fixed. My 6v '54 truck was converted to 12v by a previous owner. I wish that it was still 6v. Would make it easier to run the 6v items that originally came on the truck and would make it easier to add "factory" options. Not a daily driver. Not a lot of night driving. 500-1,000 miles a year. By the way, I've been following this thread since you first posted it. I was confused by some of the answers, too. Ray gave two suppliers that sell voltage reducers. ... Hey buddy, us old crabby guys are here when you need to know how to get a fresh rebuild to crank-over...You know I did the same thing on my '53 truck ( rebuild and 12 v conversion ) way back but eventually switched it back to 6 volt...So don't throw away all your old 6 volt stuff, you may wish you hadn't ...:)

An electric voltage reducer will be required to operate your clock and instruments. A voltage reducer is available from either company-The Filling Station or COT40s. They may be selling the same unit. I don't know how to make the answer to your question any clearer.

I am a retired professional clockmaker and restorer of antique car clocks. A simple 2 dollar resistor will work just fine on your clock. Simple resistors do not work for guages. You can email me if you like and I will explain why a resistor is all you need. bobspil@comcast.net Bob.
