Perhaps this subject has been been covered before, but what is the correct torque for a 26 head bolt?

Used bolts. 50 lbs or stop if you feel the bolt stretching. New bolts. 60 lbs. Work from the center out.

Good advice Ray, I will do exactly that. Funny, the service manual states the tightening from outside-in, but all of the people in-the-know (you included) go from the inside-out. My father told me it was to prevent “bunching” in the center. I clean the threads (male and female) and coat with Never-Seize, this assures me that the torque being applied, and the resulting resistance is truly from the threads and not grime. I use cooper gasket coating as well. I use the spray coating to assure myself an even coating.

If the tap holes go into a water gally,be sure to put a sealent(peratex-#2)on the threads!

I forgot to mention that it is important to clean out each bolt hole in the block so you don't bottom out on crud. You should also tighten the head bolts by steps, ie, 35-40-45-50 or 60.
