Got my vintage Alemite grease gun, cleaned all the grease fittings, looked at the owner's manual chart.
Looked up some old threads/other website blogs but still confused(scared to make a mistake)
Oil or grease? Steering gear, steering knuckle, shackle bolts.
Am I supposed to put heavy oil in the grease gun?
Thanks

I suspect you'll get a variety of opinions in response to your question. ;-)

I decided to lube my chassis parts with bearing grease. I took each alemite fitting off, screwed on a newer zerk fitting, pumped in the bearing grease and then put the alemite fitting back on.

For the steering gears, I filled the housing with Mobil 600W, which is what is what the original specs call for. Mobil still makes it and you can buy it by the quart or 5 gallon bucket. I also use 600W in the U-joint, tranny and differential.

I haven't run the truck long enough yet to think about lubing it over the long haul.

Cheers, Dean

All the grease parts under a Chev 4 need a good quality medium grease there is no high pressure or excessive heat, in the shackle pins or steering links, but bearings need HTB grease to cope with the heat and stress on the wheels, the main thing I have found over the last 20 years is to grease things regularly like the manual says, it is when you become lacks that wear and tear occurs, like the water pump front bearing for example, I oil it EVERY day before i drive it, never had a problem. Originally "heavy oil" (600W or SAE 160) was used in all Alemite fittings. That includes: steering gear, suspension parts. Also transmission, U-joint and rear end also used the same fluid.

Do not use grease in the steering box. Chassis grease can be used in all suspension and other steering parts.
