Here's an aftermarket front motor mount and its instructions from 1951, for '35-'48 Chevrolet cars. Besides degraded motor mounts causing chatter, it mentions to check the rearend spring U-bolts for tightness if you experience clutch chatter.
The best method for replacing motor mounts is in the shop manual. The '38 manual says 1/16" clearance is needed between each side motor mount and its bracket. It also says that the clearance between the trans crossmember and the 'U' plate should be .005" to .015", since that determines engine fore/aft movement. And, make sure that the studs for the rear mounts are tight in the trans case.

Never seen that information before. GREAT POST. Don't buy the clutch chatter threaded rods that tie the rear motor mounts to the transmission mount. It won't fit half the year models it claims to fit. I know.

BTW..what is a lever plate?

Ebay in orginal box. I'll post a photo later. They may work on something other than a 38. I need a rear engine crossmember to solve at least part of the problem. Mine has been butchered to get the 235 in place.

I agree...Good interesting post....ED
BTW...I wonder if that could be used to stop a persons jaw from useless CHATTER (like Charlies)????

It is probably the plate on the side of the transmission (side shift transmission) that the shifting levers are mounted on. That paper with directions to shim the "lever plate" sounds kinda weird to me!

Are you saying that Charlie is a RATCHET JAW? talk
How about the aireless condition of outer space?, or maybe a nice little talk with Mrs Charlie?, BTW it works for me!

I probably got the Champ front motor mount & paper years ago at a swap meet.
The "lever plate" is probably found in group number .880 in the parts catalog "Clutch pressure lever plate". This plate holds .874 "Clutch pressure lever" in '29-'37 chevs. There is a spring pushing on each of the 3 or 4 levers. These items can be seen in the picture in post 245242 on 06-10-'12, where that poster has one broken spring.
Addition, From the '38 manual: A 'rattle', at idle, in the clutch when released, can be caused by weak retracting springs or too much clearance between the drive lugs on the pressure plate and their locating slots in the clutch cover. Max clearance is .010".

Here is a paragraph from an old automotive industry magazine which might be worth a try if your lugs are too loose in their slots. This should apply to '38 and newer clutches.

This is a nice motor mount identifier for '35-'46 chev cars from a 1948 Sears catalog. The Chev mounts are those from FF to MM.
