I'm driving my 47 fleetline at about 50mph when out of nowhere, all in the same instant... I hear an air "pfff" sound, the windshield wipers do a half a wipe motion/go up and stay up, and the car turns offfff! As I pull over I try to start the car but I keep hearing a "pfff, pfff, pfff" sound from under the dash as the engine turns over but the car wont start. I find a vacuum line that popped off the wiper motor. To fix that I take the hose from the intake manifold to wiper motor and crimp it(not sure if that's the right thing to do, but I'm trying to get started and back home.) Next I find that I'm not getting spark... so after looking into this problem for awhile going through all the suspects; coil, wires, points, condensor, cap... I realize after a couple of attempts to start the car the rotor is not turning. That's where I'm stuck... the rotor isn't turning and from what I can tell when removing the distributor it's not broken. Just to be clear the engine will crank and crank, I didn't here anyone noise that would point to something broke.
What are your thoughts???

Could be a camshaft or timing gears. Are the valve rockers moving

Stripped the timing gear. Relatively common problem with over 50K miles on the old Chevy 6s.

Timing gear for sure. May also have bent some intake valve push rods and the intake valves also due to the valve hitting the top of the piston.
Timing gears usually goes because the oil supply to the gear is plugged-up with sludge. Engine front mounting plate should be removed and the oil slot cut in the back side of the mounting plate cleaned out.
Replacing the gear (removing the timing gear cover ) will require removing the oil pan. Good chance to clean out the sludge in the pan and oil pump screen.
