I have a 1940 Chevy pickup, that jumps out of high gear, got info from VCCA that in 1949 passenger car transmission, they changed the gearshift lever control spring, using a Part No. 3692295, they also changed the energizing spring, they also talked about a detent spring with 13 lbs. tension. I have contacted Chevys of the 40's, Jim Carter and some others, can't find these parts. Can anyone suggest a place to try to get them. I'm told the transmission for the 40 pickup was basically the same transmission through to 1953 or so. I'm thinking the NOS 3692295 would work on my forty 3 speed floorshift. Advise if I'm barking up the wrong tree. And if this makes sense where I might be able to find these parts. Thank you in advance, I'm new to this chat and don't know how to go in afterwards to thank someone for help.

40 CHEVYPICKUP, jumping out of third gear is a common problem with the '46 and older trucks. Those trannys were light duty units that got stressed in pickup truck duty and developed wear in bearings and synchromesh pretty early in their life. My '46 had similar jump out when I restored the truck 12 years ago. I replaced bearings and synchro parts, had the ball on the end of the shift lever built up by welding and reground to proper diameter so it just slides into the shifter interlock at the top of the tranny. This solved my popout trouble but now on steep downgrades it sometimes reoccurs. At the time I could not find new detent balls and springs for the interlock or synchro energizing springs. Mine still seemed to be in good condition so I reused. Most of the critical parts are still findable with patient searching. If you don't have the shop manual for the truck I urge you to buy one. Reprints are available from the usual parts suppliers. There ARE some differences between truck and passenger car trannys. I recall that synchro parts are the same but some bearings not.
My '46 GMC has the old oversize non- synchro 4 speed. I wanted to use a 3 speed when I restored it and could'nt find one for a reasonable price. Now I kind of enjoy the challenge of clash free shifting with double clutching!
Sorry I can't give you an easy solution- just go slow and don't part with cash for parts without exploring the possibilities. Good luck.
