The gas gauge sending unit is rusted. the arm with the float is free but the gear on the bottom is frozen. it appears to be brass. i have soaked it in kroil, liquid wrench, and sea foam for several days. i tried heating it with a propane torch. still tight. any tips on how to fix it would be appreciated.

thanks,

joe

You should be able to get a new sending unit from the Filling Station in Lebanon, Oregon.

It may take extra time to free up .Be paitent It took me a month to get the hinge pin out of my hood. finally last night it started to move. Be carefull with the heat theres a resistor wire in there that could be dammaged very easily. If you have an ultrasound bath that will remove some of the varnish as well.

Also, keep in mind that if you are able to free up the sending unit due to the past corrosion the sending unit may still "hang up" from time to time and not read accurately.

Also, something to think about. If you have an early 31 car, the sending units from the FS are larger than the older ones and the screws that hold it down are a different thread. It happened to me on my coupe. Good luck with it.

Yes, I discovered that last year too. The replacement sending units are a "universal" replacement, so you may have to do some futzing around in order to get it mounted.

But -- once done, it's a brand new unit and you should NEVER have to mess with it again!!!
