Radiator surrounds are the problem part for a 28. Peter Jackson's surrounds are a repair panel for side and bottom. They need to be welded to the old top. There are a lot of people who think they can weld thin aluminium, most can't. Pete's surrounds are quite well made but the sides are not convex like the originals; they are flat. There are also a number of steel surrounds that were fitted to 1/2 ton commercials. They are desirable because they are much easier to repair and take chrome well. Basically the radiator surround is the face of the car and needs to be presented well so start thinking $1000+.At the moment there is a surround on eBay in Canada. It appears to be steel but it may not be.Anyway take it carefully. The rest of the car is easy.

Hi All. I have been pretty busy lately, unfortunately not on the Chevrolet.
However, I have managed to do some work. All the doors have come off for the 15 time and are relatively dent free and all have minute amounts of body filler ready for sanding. Hopefully sanding of the doors and cowell will take place sometime this weekend.

The rear tub is good to go and primed.

Friday, I intend to make up the templates for the two sections of the front window. I have templates for a 1927 Chevrolet. The only difference seems to be the height of both window sections.

Will post photos son

Has anyone purchased one of the engine gasket kits for the 1928 off eBay? Are they any good?

Cheers

Hi 1928 Chevtourer,

The glass from a 27 is different to a 28, and you could get caught out, like I did 38 years ago.27 windscreen supports are curved where 28's are straight.

Hope that helps.

Good luck with the ongoing work.

Cheers

Ray

I get gasket sets from the filling station, they're cheaper than ebay and you can get some other goodies at the same time. Also Ian Marris at chevparts has kits for about the same cost.

Also '27 & '28 windscreens are different. Sides on '27 curve in at bottom as well as other differences.

Chevparts in Sydney supply a good engine gasket kit, they use modern neoprene cork in their caskets. Sometimes the ones on Ebay are old and the cork is no good. Steer clear of composite gaskets as they don't last, there is another place in Sydney that makes copper head gaskets gaskets, about $90. They are well proven on many Chev 4's, not sure of their name but hopefully someone in Aus. will know and advise you.

Ray,
you will probably get 10 replys to the 'caged nut' query.
By U.S. definition it is a square or hex sided nut retained
in a housing such that it can wiggle slightly for alignment
but not rotate as the bolt or screw is inserted. Trouble is
after years of rusting the nut edges roundoff as you try to
remove the screw and the blasted thing rotates and won't come
apart!

White was not a choice when the 28s were new. It could be an early repaint or paint change.

Hi 1928 Chev Tourer

Looking forward to seeing pictures of your progress.

There's a young bloke down Gippsland way who could take a leaf out of your book, and paint his 28 Tourer also.

And who knows, his lady might be happy to ride in it?

Cheers

Ray

This is a car I almost picked up at the end of last year, I just missed out on the bidding. It sold for about $7000, It had been sitting in a shed here in South Australia since the 70s. I think it was a 27 or 28 Dodge Buckboard

Hi 1928 Chev Tourer,

Not surprised, as I have heard similar amounts being bandied around. I think Monty the 28 Chev's Grant was quoted about $5,000.

4 years ago I paid $850 to refit my 38 year old hood, tidy up a few bits and make new carpets, and I waas happy with the job and the price.

That's the exact same amount I paid in 75 for the full upolstery hood, side curtains and carpets.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

By the way, does 1928 Chev Tourers owner have a name?

Cheers

Ray

Hi Darren,

Now that's better.

Each time I typed your user name in a post I felt like I was sending a message to my Chev.

And we know that cars cant read, or mine cant anyway.

Cheers, and good luck with the rest of the paint job.

Ray

Fuel line from tank to vac tank is 5/16. I use copper but steel should be O.K.
