I have a question regrading the metal vacumm hose that comes off the carb. On my 40 chevy I have the vacumm hose that comes off the carb. It splits in to two locations. One side runs down by the tranny and turns stright up and stops. It needs a rubber hose on it however I'm not sure where the rubber hose goes. With out anything to attach to this hose the car dosen't want to run well and the wipers won't work.
Any help would be great.

The vacuum line that runs down by your tranny went to your vacuum shifter. If your car has been converted to eliminate the vacuum shifter - then simply plug this line. If the vacuum shifter mechanism is there - take a look at a shop manual to find the port on the vacuum shifter to hook it to. There's also an exhaust port on the vacuum shifter that had a hose running to a filter housing mounted on the car's frame.

Blmfighter As a tempory measure to improve the engine running put a piece of rubber hose on the end of the pipe and seal it off. Tony

You did not state if you had the original vacuum assist on the transmission. Has it been removed?

As stated, If you have a vac shifter underneath, It is most important that the vac hose gets hooked back up. You'll know if you have a hard time shifting the gears without it. Check underneath.. you can't miss it. Good luck. Let us know what you find and we'll give you some more input.

I believe that it is still there. I'm not sure. The vacumm tube goes down on the drivers side by the bell housing and then come stright up about 2 inches.

Thank you. I just got this car and only paid $1,000. But I have never had a car this old. My oldest car before this was a 68.

The link does work with a slight modification, do ctrl+c then ctrl+V you then need to type the .com in the correct place. Nice car, you should have many hours of fun with it. Tony

Nice manual, Bruce...I bought one off ebay a while back...Don't see them often...It's filed away in my "library", not sure I'll ever get use it, getting tougher to find a vacuum assist unit in descent shape for the car, if at all...!

Chef: My 48 had the vacuum unit on it when I bought the car. I drove it for a while, but, the unit leaked vacuum and malfunctioned about 30% of the time. I scored a conversion kit, and, took it off. The car is much more enjoyable to drive now, runs cool, and makes more power.
